Hi Guys,

there's a Test n Tune day at Willowbank on the 23rd of Feb http://www.willowbank-raceway.com.au/tntpage.htm.

It's $36 for the driver and a passenger and you need a helmet and long pants, long sleeve shirt and covered shoes if you want to race. Apparently you can pick up a helmet from about $100-$150 bucks.

I'm not sure if I'll have my car fixed by then or a helmet so I might come along as someones passenger and film from the stands if my PS is still broke.

Anyone keen?

cheers

Hmmm 23rd ey...my intercepter should be done by then..:happywank:. Be a nice opportunity to test it. Lee can pick you up but may also have another passenger, is that allowed?

leebutts

Hopefully my car can be fixed by then but otherwise I'll take you up on that offer.

No dramas with two passengers - I can just pay the $18 spectator entry fee.

Can someone lend me a helmet? It would want to be a large as I have a big head.

I'm not supposed to be spending money on car related adventures at the moment and a helmet is a little hard to hide from the Mrs :)

Hi Guys,

I just got home - nothing broke!! YAY!

My best time was 14.3, never got the perfect launch - bogged down a couple of times and had the clutch slip big time on my last run (14.8).

I ran 15 flat on my first run so I was quite happy with my progress as the night progressed (and the temp dropped from 32 to 22)

Can't wait to get back there after a few more mods. I highly recommend all the QLD boys get out there and give it a go. They run Wed and Sat nights, check the website for when the next one is.

Ben had done a 14.1 when I last talked to him and he was going to have one more run so hopefully he broke the 14sec barrier!

cheers

Boost turned up (15psi peak), Greddy Iridium plugs (one heat range colder than standard) and a bit of hacksaw work to the front grill to open up the airflow :)

well done guys! what was u'r terminal speed Lee?

Best was 156km/h. Best 60ft was 2.05. Best reaction 0.97.

Hey Lee what seemed to be your best launch technique?
RPM at the start, release clutch style, RPM at gear change...

Just Plain Nuts
24-02-2008, 06:31 AM
I stuffed the last run..too high revs the car creaped forward and tripped the line and I was committed to go then only ran a 14.3 for that one. It should run a high 13 with a few more runs.

We didn't have anyone with in the stands with a video unfortunately - but I bought a pic of me launching which was taken by a photographer on track. I'll post it once it arrives.

It was just me and Ben from OZVR4 - Justin was supposed to be there but changed his mind at the last minute *cough* soft *cough* :D

There was a standard Stagea that did 15.1 and a 180sx that I went up against did a 13.2 (boy did I wish I had bigger turbos as he pulled away!).

I also had a run against a late model STI Liberty and he bet me across the line by a car length or two but I never found the timing slip so I don't know what our times were or what mods he had done to the Liberty

I think my best run I let the clutch out quickly from around 3500-4000rpm, it's hard to remember as there is so much going through your head as you're watching the lights!

As I mentioned it bogged down a couple of times with lower revs and I tried using higher revs and riding the clutch but it slipped pretty bad.

Ideally you would have a tougher clutch and be able to let it out quickly (maybe not just step off it, but still let it out quick) at 5000rpm.

As for gear change points I was pretty much revving out to redline, maybe a little lower say 6500. I tried short shifting one run as my max kw is about 5500 I think, but the revs dropped too low and stuffed up the run lol

Well done lads, speaking to Lee after the drags, he sounded like he had a great time.

Does anyone in here have some standard wheels to borrow if I were to join in the next run? Of course I would have to do a few mods first.

How hard would it be to have the strip to oursleves one evening? Im guessing we would have to have an official of some sort....

Thoughts???

Pretty hard I'd say and very expensive. I'd recommend hitting it on a Wed night when it might be a bit quieter.

I got there early and got in 4 runs before it got busy (probably could have done more but I let the car cool down a bit between runs).

A wednesday wouldn't be a bad idea...

Four runs with breaks between isn't too bad. From what I'd head that's about all you'd usually get in in a night here. Despite the track back in Townsville being sh*t, one thing I loved is that you could get in 40+ runs in a night if you wanted to. Cheap too @ $22.

Back in T'ville there was a disused WW2 airstrip that few people knew about that we sometimes went and had a play on. 1.1km long. Was good fun! Land has been sold now unfortunately.

I got in 4 before it got busy and another 3 later on, so 7 in total - I was pretty happy with that.

Well I finally hardened up and took the leggy to willowbank this evening. :D

Best run of the night was 14.2 @ 99mph. Stock manual legnum, best time I was running ~12psi. Launches were a quick slip from 3000rpm. Any more and the clutch would just flare up...

Was hoping for a few runs later on in the evening when things cooled down a bit, but it was getting a bit busy by then and I was out of time.

All up pretty damn happy!

The gear change is not the problem, its the launch off the line. The auto/tip will lose about half a second off the line. Its really easy to lose half a second but it will take your time from a low 14 to a mid 13.

Agreed. That was probably my weak point out there. My 60 footers were around 2.2s, which is pretty woeful for an AWD. That said, that's only because I was only doing pretty soft launches in the interests of keeping my clutch happy. No reason why it couldn't do 2.0 or less with a hard launch....good enough to get mine into the 13s and over 100mph.

Just Plain Nuts
07-03-2008, 06:44 AM
I managed a 14.1 but I only had three runs and botched the the third. I should get into the 13's with more practice.

bradc
07-03-2008, 02:54 PM
the auto's are easier to get off the line fast. Left foot on the brake, right on the throttle with the car in drive. Put as much weight as possible on the brake and rev it up as high as you can in drive, should be 2500-3000rpm, then when the light goes green, just floor it and lift off the brake. Super quick :)

Just Plain Nuts
07-03-2008, 05:59 PM
problem being the brakes are dead cold cause you have been sitting in line for hours and I tried to give it too much and it creeped forward triggering the time. With more practice it will get better but I still prefer 5000 revs step offs like I used to do in my wrx.

bratwurst_boy
07-03-2008, 09:34 PM
do the auto gearboxes in the vr4's have a factory stall converter??? or would it be easy to get one installed????

Murph
07-03-2008, 10:44 PM
Every automatic gearbox has a "stall converter"......which is actually called a torque converter. The stall speed is a characteristic of a torque converter. In the case of the VR-4s it's somewhere between 2500 and 3000rpm based on what the auto owners have said above.

Someone should start a thread where we can all post our timeslips and start a top 10 list of best times.

I think I will be heading out in May some time as the wife is giving birth in about 4 weeks and I don't want the car off the road if something breaks.
